Girls Achievement Program (G.A.P), mentors’ students and partners with their parents in an effort to overcome barriers to maintain school readiness, acceptable school attendance and as well as opportunities to eliminate the summer slide. J5 meets weekly with the girls and quarterly with both mentee's and their mothers for activities to increase a stronger bond. This component provides weekly mentoring to the girls via volunteers, who are certified teachers and counselors at their school. This essential component is ongoing throughout the school year with measurable improvements of the student’s emotional, social and academic progress. During the summer months, students are encouraged to participate in a “Summer Educational Program” that promote academic growth in order to avoid the academic decline. Students and parents must participate in the "Back-to-School Kick-Off" in order to receive the grade level supplies for school preparedness.
The Dream Board program uses a two-generation approach which focuses on empowering students and their mothers to mentally prepare for personal, educational and career goals. According to a study conducted by Gail Matthews at Dominican University, “Those who wrote down their goals accomplished significantly more than those who did not write down their goals”.
This is done through a four-step approach that is clear and measurable:
Summer Time Fun allows for girls, mothers and mentors alike to let their hair down and prove there's no age gap when it comes to having a good time with friends.
We offer workshops on Home ownership, Financial Planning, Credit Repair, and Vocational Training open to the public.
